At three years old, horses are still learning the game. A single fourth-place finish tells you almost nothing about what a horse is capable of; plenty of good horses have taken a race or two to find their feet. What matters more right now is who is doing the training. Harry Eustace operates out of Newmarket, the spiritual home of British racing, and his yard has already sent out 24 winners this season alone — a figure that puts him firmly among the busier and more productive operations in the country. Ending up in a stable that knows how to get horses winning is exactly where a young horse wants to be.
There is nothing to get excited about yet, and nothing to write off either. Liberate is one race into what could be a career of 30 or 40 outings. Check back in a few months.
