The Class 4 record — the mid-tier of British racing — makes it starker: three races at that level and not a single win. For context, Class 4 is not the glamour end of things; it is where solid, workmanlike horses compete. That Legal Weapon has not broken through there yet is the central puzzle.

What keeps the faith alive is the yard behind it. Trainer Ben Pauling operates out of Naunton in the Gloucestershire hills and has sent out 89 winners already this season — that is a stable in serious form, not one making up the numbers. Pauling himself, speaking last November before Legal Weapon had even won, singled the horse out as one of his standout prospects. He talked about a horse that moves well at home, looks the part physically, and has the profile of a genuine stayer — someone built for the longer distances rather than a horse with a quick burst of speed. "Fills the eye" is trainer-speak for a horse that looks impressive in the flesh, and it is not a phrase you throw around lightly.

Regular jockey Ben Jones has been aboard for nine of the ten races and has that single Warwick win to show for it. The partnership is 1 from 9 together — patient, persistent, still searching for a repeat. The gap since that December victory is now seventeen months, which in racing terms is a long time to be placing without winning. But Legal Weapon is six, still relatively young for a jumper with time ahead, trained by someone who clearly believes in it, and racing frequently enough that the next opportunity is never far away.
