Leadman

The broader numbers are honest rather than flattering. One win from 21 races is a win rate of just 5% — roughly one in every twenty attempts — and nine placed efforts suggest a horse who shows up and tries without quite getting the job done. He most often competes in Class 3 races, which is a solid mid-tier level, and has won one of seven at that grade, so the ability is there in flashes. His most recent six runs read 2-6-8-6-–-8, which tells a story of one near-miss followed by a gradual drift back down the field.

David O'Meara trains him out of Upper Helmsley in North Yorkshire, and this is a yard firing on all cylinders — 107 winners already this season, which is a seriously productive spell. O'Meara has been open about the fact that Leadman arrived from Andrew Balding's operation and that while there's talent in there, he may have a soft temperament — trainer-speak for a horse that doesn't always commit fully when the pressure comes on. That context is useful. It explains why a horse with nine placed finishes has only one win to his name, and why unlocking that potential has been more of a project than a straightforward process. Daniel Tudhope has been the regular jockey without a win from five rides together, though that may say as much about the horse's consistency as anything else.

Leadman raced just yesterday and remains in active training, so the story isn't over. A horse who arrives second in the stewards' room and has placed nearly half the time is clearly competitive. Whether he can find that winning feeling again is the question O'Meara and the yard are still working to answer.
