The most encouraging number in the book is actually the 6, which represents a mid-race best and at least suggests there is something to build on. But finishing sixth from three races, with a fifteenth and a tenth either side of it, means the yard will be hoping for significant improvement if this horse is to start paying its way.
That yard is run by J S Bolger at Coolcullen in Co Carlow — one of the most respected training operations in Irish racing. Bolger has shaped the careers of serious racehorses over decades, so the team clearly believes there is potential here worth nurturing. Seven winners sent out this season shows the stable is in decent form, even if Lar Na Coille hasn't yet contributed to that tally. With the horse still only three years old and racing as recently as yesterday, there is time yet — but the next few races will matter a great deal in telling us whether that patience is likely to be rewarded.
