What makes this worth watching, at least for now, is the timing. Land Of Spirit raced just yesterday and is clearly an active part of Kieran P Cotter's plans at the Portarlington yard in County Laois. Cotter's operation has sent out seven winners this season, which shows there is ability in the yard — the horses are winning races, just not this one yet. Sometimes a young horse takes time to click, and trainers do not keep running horses that have no future. The fact that Land Of Spirit is still being aimed at races is a signal, however faint, that the team believes there is something there to work with.
At this stage, though, the record speaks plainly: zero wins from three attempts, with finishing positions that suggest it has been well beaten each time. If things do not improve soon, questions will be asked about whether the horse is finding the right opportunities.
