Lady Delila

Her recent form tells a similar story. In her last six races she has posted a second and two thirds alongside a ninth, a seventh, and a fifth — results that paint a picture of a horse who shows up and tries, but tends to find one or two too good on the day. She raced just yesterday, so this is very much a live, active campaign.

Her most regular partner in the saddle is Donagh O'Connor, and together they have yet to find the winner's enclosure in five attempts. That does not mean the partnership is not working — five races is not a huge sample — but there is clearly still something missing when it counts. Lady Delila tends to line up at Class 6, the entry level of British racing, where fields are typically made up of horses who have either never won or struggle to do so regularly. Even at that level, a win has so far stayed out of reach across four attempts.

She is trained by Iain Jardine at his yard in Carrutherstown, in Dumfries and Galloway. Jardine is having a productive season — 57 winners sent out is a strong return and suggests a yard that knows how to get horses ready to run. That makes Lady Delila something of an outlier in the string; not every horse in any yard is a winner, and she represents the stubborn challenge of a horse who simply has not found the right race yet. Whether that day comes remains the open question.
