The one flicker of promise in that run of results came four races ago, when Knowing Me finished fourth — the closest it has come to troubling the judge and the only time in recent memory it has looked like a horse with something to offer. Whether that was a course that suited, a drop in the level of competition, or simply a good day at the office, it has not been repeated since, with back-to-back 11th-place finishes following immediately after.
To be fair to Declan Queally, the yard itself is in decent form — 28 winners on the board this season is a solid return and shows the operation knows how to produce a ready horse. Knowing Me, though, has so far resisted all efforts. Still active — it ran just yesterday — there is clearly a belief somewhere within the team that the horse has a race to be won in it. At six years old and with seven starts on the clock, that patience is being tested. For now, Knowing Me remains one of racing's stubborn puzzles: a horse that keeps turning up without ever quite arriving.
