The recent form makes for sobering reading. Over the last six races, King's Call has finished 11th, 8th, 18th, 10th, 13th, and 13th — the most recent of those just a day ago, which at least confirms the horse is active and still being campaigned. Those are not the numbers of a horse on the verge of a breakthrough. Finishing 18th in a race is not unlucky; it is a long way back.
What is interesting, though, is that King's Call has been regularly tried in Class 1 company — some of the most competitive races run in Britain. In five attempts at that level, the win column reads zero. That is a bold move by Seb Spencer's yard in Malton, North Yorkshire, and it either speaks to genuine ambition or a puzzle that has yet to be solved. Spencer's team have sent out 13 winners this season, so the operation clearly knows what it is doing — King's Call just hasn't found a way to contribute to that tally.
The one bright spot in the record is that Ayr win, and it is worth holding onto. It proves the horse can get to the front and stay there, at least under the right conditions. Whether it can do so again — and whether a step back in class might unlock something — is the question that the yard, and presumably a few patient punters, are still trying to answer.
