What works in his favour is who is doing the unlocking. Gordon Elliott's yard in Longwood, Co Meath, is one of the most powerful operations in Irish racing, and this season alone they have sent out 209 winners — a number that puts them among the elite training operations on either island. When a yard is firing at that rate, horses in the string tend to get every opportunity to find their feet and show what they can do. Elliott has a long track record of being patient with horses that take time to click, and King Of Westeros, who raced just one day ago, is clearly still being given chances to prove himself.
The honest summary right now is that he is a work in progress. He has not won or even placed in four attempts, which is a thin return, but four races is still a relatively small sample for a five-year-old finding his way. The fourth-place finish is the one to hold onto — it shows he can at least get into contention. Whether he can turn that into something more concrete is the question Elliott and his team will be trying to answer.
