The most striking thing about this horse is what happens when the ground gets soft. When the conditions suit, this one turns into an entirely different animal. The problem is that the right ground does not come along every week, and the last eighteen months have not been kind: a win at Taunton on 28 November 2024 remains the most recent success, and the last six races have brought nothing better than a second place.

That runner-up finish is a small bright spot in otherwise frustrating recent form — a 4th, a 15th, a 9th, a 2nd, a 16th, and a 3rd, reading back from yesterday's race. It is the profile of a horse that is competitive on its best days but inconsistent, which is exactly what you would expect from something racing mainly at Class 4 level, the bread-and-butter tier of British racing. At that level, King Of The Road has won just 1 from 9 races, which tells you it is not dominating the grade it typically competes in.

The partnership with jockey Kielan Woods is worth watching, though. Together they have won 3 of their 9 races — that is 1 in 3, which is a genuinely strong ratio and far above the horse's overall average. All three of King Of The Road's career wins have come with Woods in the saddle, suggesting there is a real understanding there. Ben Pauling's yard has been in excellent form this season — 91 winners is a serious number — so the infrastructure is there for this horse to find its moment. It just needs soft ground, the right race, and Kielan Woods to book the ride.
