King David

The level at which King David competes tells its own story. Class 5 is the bread-and-butter end of British racing — the races where horses who aren't quite good enough for higher company spend most of their careers. King David has run 16 times at that level and won just once, a win rate of roughly 1 in every 16. That's a slim return, and it's the kind of record that suggests a horse who is competitive enough to keep getting entered but rarely finds the extra gear needed to win. Eight places from 22 races does at least show some consistency — King David hits the frame more often than it misses entirely — but placing and winning are very different things.

The partnership with jockey Marco Ghiani hasn't clicked yet either. Six races together, zero wins. That's not necessarily Ghiani's fault — the horse's overall record suggests the issue runs deeper — but it's a combination that hasn't produced results. Trainer Gay Kelleway, based in Exning in Suffolk, has sent out two winners from her yard this season, so King David isn't alone in making things difficult. The recent form figures — a seventh, a non-completion, a fourth, a second, a fourth, and a sixth — show a horse that ran well enough to finish second at one point, which is at least a sign of life, but the wins simply aren't coming.

Raced just yesterday and still active, King David is clearly a tough horse who keeps turning up. At five years old, there's still time to find another winning opportunity — and Kempton Park, where that solitary career highlight came, might be worth watching if the yard ever head back there. For now though, this is a profile of honest endeavour rather than headline moments.
