Kilgharrahs Love

The recent form makes for tough reading. Looking at the last six races, the numbers run 8-6-7-15-11-7, meaning the best of those efforts was a sixth and the worst was a distant fifteenth. There is no obvious upward curve here, no sense that a breakthrough is just around the corner. Racing just one day ago, Kilgharrahs Love is clearly an active and busy campaigner, but busy and productive are two very different things.

The partnership with jockey Rory Cleary — who shares a surname with trainer Thomas Cleary, suggesting this is a family operation based out of Athlone in County Westmeath — has been given a long run of faith. Eight races together and not a single win is a significant investment of patience. To put that in perspective, most jockey-horse partnerships that aren't working get changed up long before eight attempts. The fact that this combination keeps being persisted with says something about the yard's belief, or perhaps the limited alternatives available. Thomas Cleary's team has sent out three winners this season, so they are clearly capable of winning races — Kilgharrahs Love just hasn't been the horse to provide them.

What keeps things interesting is that a horse with thirteen races under its belt at four years old is not some unraced unknown — it has real experience. Somewhere in those thirteen outings is a placed finish that proves it can beat at least some of its rivals on its day. Whether that translates into a first win depends on finding the right race, the right day, and perhaps a little luck. For now, Kilgharrahs Love remains one of racing's most persistent nearly-horses — always there, never quite over the line.
