He hasn't been seen on a racecourse for roughly five months, which is a significant absence for a young horse still learning his trade. Whether that break was planned or enforced by a minor setback, we simply don't know, but the key question on his return is whether he picks up where he left off or needs a run to find his feet again.

What works in his favour is the stable behind him. Charles Hills trains out of Lambourn in Berkshire, one of the most respected racing bases in the country, and his yard has sent out 32 winners already this season — a strong, consistent output that suggests a well-run operation with horses in good form. When a horse comes back from a break in a yard firing like that, it at least gives you confidence that the preparation has been professional. Khafar hasn't won yet, but he's pointed in the right direction, and the team around him clearly know how to get horses ready to perform.
