The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. Over the last six races, Kev has finished 6th, 12th, 10th, 9th, 8th, and 13th — working backwards from yesterday's outing. That's consistently towards the rear of the field, and the trend isn't pointing upward. Jockey Sean Levey, who has partnered Kev in 5 of those 8 races, is yet to find the winning formula either, drawing a blank every time the pair have lined up together.
Kev typically competes at Class 5, which is the bread-and-butter level of British racing — the entry point, where horses are expected to be competitive if they're going to make any mark at all. Going winless from 5 races at that level suggests the horse is finding even this grade a real challenge. Trainer Tom Ward, based at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, has had a productive season with 14 winners from his yard, so the expertise is clearly there. Kev just hasn't been able to tap into it yet.
What keeps things interesting is that Kev raced just yesterday and is very much an active runner — this story isn't over. At four years old there's still time to turn things around, and every horse that eventually wins its first race has to do it somewhere. For now though, Kev is one of racing's hard-luck stories: honest, busy, and still waiting for that breakthrough moment.
