The recent form figures make for fairly grim reading. Working back from yesterday's run — 6, 8, 3, 4, 12, 7 — the only real bright spot is that third-place finish, which at least shows the horse can get competitive on the right day. The 12 is the one that raises an eyebrow, suggesting at least one race where things went badly wrong. Aside from that third, nothing here points to a horse on the verge of breaking through.
It's worth noting that McCarthy's yard has sent out 15 winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to the winner's enclosure. Kelly's Cosmos just hasn't been one of them yet. Whether a change of race, different ground conditions, or simply more time and experience can unlock something better remains to be seen — but at five years old and without a win to its name, the window isn't getting any wider.
