Karuma Grey

The most recent of those wins came at Ffos Las in December 2024, now 16 months ago, and there has been no win since across the last six races. The recent form figures make for fairly quiet reading, with a second place the only real highlight in that stretch. At eight years old, Karuma Grey is not getting younger, and those blank runs will be a source of some frustration for the team.

What is perhaps holding the horse back is the level it has been asked to compete at. In four attempts at Class 3 — one step down from the very top tier of British racing — Karuma Grey has yet to win, drawing a blank in all four. That suggests the horse is most dangerous when dropped into slightly less competitive company, which is exactly where its two career victories have come. The first win arrived at Gowran Park in Ireland in March 2023, and the second at the Welsh track Ffos Las nearly two years later — two fairly different settings, but both occasions where the horse was clearly well placed on the day.

Karuma Grey is trained by Barry John Murphy, whose yard is based in Caerfyrddin in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It has been a quiet season for the stable, with just one winner sent out so far. The horse raced as recently as six days ago, so the yard are clearly still keeping it active and looking for the right opportunity to get back in the winner's enclosure. Whether that moment comes before the season is out remains to be seen, but at this stage Karuma Grey looks like a horse that needs everything to fall just right.
