The recent form makes for tough reading. Across the last six runs, Journey So Far has finished 9th, well down the field, 12th, 7th, and 8th, with the gaps in between suggesting the horse has needed time off along the way. A run just one day ago means this profile is as current as it gets, but there's no sign yet of a breakthrough around the corner.
What makes this slightly puzzling is the yard behind it. Gavin Cromwell operates out of Navan in County Meath and has sent out 97 winners already this season — that is a genuinely productive training operation, the kind that knows how to place a horse well and get results. When a yard is firing at that rate and a horse still can't get off the mark after ten attempts, it tends to suggest the horse simply isn't quite good enough to win at the level it's been running at, rather than anything going wrong behind the scenes. Cromwell will know that better than anyone.
For now, Journey So Far remains one of those horses that fills out a field, gives its the yard a day at the races, and heads home without troubling the judge. That's the reality for plenty of horses in training, and there's no shame in it — but until the scoreboard changes, the name will keep raising a wry smile.
