Menzies, who has been quietly productive this season with 36 winners from her Morden base, bought Joecooker specifically to go jumping over fences, but has found him useful enough over hurdles in the meantime. She has spoken about him as a big, strong horse with a likeable attitude who simply has not shown his best yet — which, given he is only seven, is not wishful thinking so much as a reasonable observation. Some horses take time to fill into their frame and their confidence.

His regular jockey Jamie Hamilton has partnered him nine times and managed 1 win from those outings — roughly 1 in every 9 rides together — which is a modest return, though the consistent placing record suggests the pair have been competitive without always getting the rub of the green. Joecooker ran just yesterday, so he is clearly in good enough shape to keep competing. Whether a step back in class or the switch to fences eventually unlocks something more is the question worth watching. For now, he is a horse who keeps showing up and keeps being involved — and for a team that clearly believes in him, that counts for something.
