Winning there takes a particular kind of horse, one that can adapt and stay switched on under pressure. Jersey Maverick managed it, and that moment remains the high point of a career that has otherwise been defined more by consistency than brilliance.

The recent form tells a mixed story. Placed second twice in the last six races, but also a couple of efforts further back in the field that suggest the horse finds it easier on some days than others. Crucially, Jersey Maverick has drawn a blank in eight races at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter tier where most horses of this profile pick up the bulk of their wins. Going 0 from 8 at that level is a puzzle worth noting. It raises the question of whether the horse simply needs things to fall right on the day, or whether that Epsom win came in conditions that particularly suited it.

Charlie Fellowes trains the yard out of Newmarket, which is essentially the heartland of British flat racing — a base that gives horses access to excellent facilities and strong competition in morning work. Someone there will be thinking carefully about where the next opportunity lies.

Raced just yesterday, Jersey Maverick is clearly fit and being kept active. The team has not given up on finding another winning moment. Whether it comes depends on finding the right race — but if Epsom comes around again, it would be unwise to dismiss this one too quickly.
