The most eye-catching moment of his career came at Haydock Park in April 2023, when he landed a Class 2 race — one of the top races in Britain. Trainer Dan Skelton admitted afterwards that the timing had been deliberate: he had held the horse back, waiting for the right conditions to appear, because fast, dry ground suits Jeffery's Cross and freshness is key to getting the best from him. That kind of patience with a horse is a mark of a well-organised yard, and Skelton's operation at Alcester has sent out 194 winners this season alone, so there is clearly no shortage of know-how.
Most of Jeffery's Cross's racing has come at Class 4 level — the solid middle ground of British racing — where he has won 2 from 10, a rate of 1 in every 5. His most regular partner in the saddle is Mr Sean O'Connor, and together they have clicked immediately: 3 wins from 8 rides, meaning they win together roughly 2 times in every 5, which is a very strong partnership by any measure. His latest win came at Newbury just six weeks ago, so the horse arrives at this stage of the season in excellent health and clearly thriving.
Skelton's own comments over time tell a story of a horse who has taken patience to figure out. After his debut win at Warwick back in March 2022, the trainer described him as a work in progress who needed time. He has since proved himself in hunter chases — a specialist branch of the sport — and the current plan is to keep mixing that side of his career with competitive handicap races. There is a clear ambition to keep winning before the season closes out. Given the recent form and a trainer firing on all cylinders, backing Jeffery's Cross to add to his tally looks anything but a long shot.
