Whatever clicked at Nottingham that November afternoon has not clicked again, and at Class 5 — the entry-level tier of British racing — she has won just 1 from 9 races at that level, or about 1 in every 9 attempts. She is competitive enough to fill a place, but the finishing kick has gone quiet.

Jockey Alex Jary has been the most loyal presence in the saddle, partnering Jeany May in 14 of her 20 races. Together they have that single win — a 7% win rate, or 1 from 14 — which more or less mirrors her overall record. The partnership has continuity, if not yet the results to match. Behind the scenes, trainer Nigel Tinkler operates out of Langton in North Yorkshire and has had a productive season, sending out 37 winners. Jeany May has not been one of them, but Tinkler clearly believes there is something to work with — she raced just one day ago, so this is very much an active campaign.

The question with a horse like Jeany May is whether that Nottingham win was a glimpse of potential or simply a good day that arrived once and moved on. Seven places from 20 races suggests she is no passenger, but at four years old, time is not exactly running out. Tinkler's yard is in good form, the horse is racing regularly, and somewhere in there is the outline of a horse that knows how to finish in the money. Whether it can find the winner's enclosure again is the one thing the form book cannot yet answer.
