Trainer Clive Cox, who operates one of Lambourn's most productive yards — 48 winners already this season — has been careful and deliberate with Jasour. Cox has spoken about a period where the horse needed patient, attentive handling after a difficult experience as a younger horse left him anxious and unsettled in races. The whole team spent months working to bring him back to himself, giving him turnout, time, and space. That effort paid off visibly when jockey Jim Crowley, who has won 2 of his 9 rides on Jasour (about 1 in every 4), seemed to unlock something in the horse at Newmarket. Their partnership has become the one Cox trusts.

The catch is that Jasour has not won in his last six races, and his most recent run — sixth at Haydock just a couple of days ago — continued that drought. Cox has been quick to point out that the Haydock run came with an excuse: a bruised foot had disrupted the horse's preparation, and he arrived a little fresh and short of his best. Given how dry conditions have historically suited him — 2 wins from 7 races on fast ground, compared to nothing on softer surfaces — the ground and the moment need to be right.

What keeps this horse interesting is the ceiling Cox clearly believes is still there. After Jasour's eye-catching third in last year's Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, Cox was already talking publicly about a tilt at the July Cup — one of the most prestigious sprint races in Europe. That ambition says everything. You do not point a horse at the July Cup unless you genuinely think it belongs in that conversation. At five years old, with a fresher preparation and the right conditions, there is a case that the best of Jasour may not yet be behind him.
