Both of those wins have come over long distances, two miles or more, and that pattern matters. In 24 races at that trip, Isle Of Sark has won twice — 1 in every 12 — which is twice as good as its overall record suggests. Strip away the shorter races where it's clearly just making up the numbers, and you start to see a horse that at least has a department it can operate in. It tends to run at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle of the British racing pyramid — not the elite end, but competitive enough that winning takes genuine ability on the day.
The breakthrough at Newton Abbot in July 2025 was a long time coming, and then a second win followed at Sedgefield in October. What made that Sedgefield victory particularly interesting was the addition of a visor — a piece of headgear designed to sharpen a horse's focus — worn for the first time. Trainer Micky Hammond noted it made all the difference, with the horse showing a great attitude. That kind of detail is worth filing away: sometimes a small change unlocks something. Whether it lasts is the question.
It hasn't won in the seven months since Sedgefield, and its last six results — a couple of thirds bookending a run of mid-field finishes — suggest it's doing its job without threatening to take another race. Jockey Saffie Osborne, who has ridden Isle Of Sark more than anyone else, is still waiting for a first win together from 11 attempts. That's not a criticism of either horse or rider — some combinations just don't click, and at this level the margins are fine.
Hammond's yard at Middleham in North Yorkshire has sent out 25 winners this season, so there's clearly plenty going right in the stable. Isle Of Sark, raced just yesterday and still active at eight, isn't the headline act — but it keeps showing up, keeps placing, and occasionally reminds everyone why it's still in training.
