What makes that Brighton victory stand out is that it remains the only time she has managed it, and she has been unable to repeat the trick despite racing regularly. She raced just yesterday, so she is very much an active horse right now.

The partnership with jockey Lewis Edmunds is a long-standing one — they have teamed up eight times together — but it has yet to produce a win. Joey Ramsden trains her from his yard in Newark, Nottinghamshire, and the operation has sent out five winners this season, so the form is there in the yard — it just has not come Isla Bella's way yet.

Perhaps the most telling detail is her record at Class 6, which is the lowest level of British racing — essentially the entry point where horses compete if they have not shown enough to step up. She has run 12 times at that level without winning once. That is a striking statistic, because Class 6 is precisely where a horse like Isla Bella is expected to be competitive. Going 0 from 12 at the grade you are pitched at suggests that a first win — or a second — may require everything to fall just right on the day. At four years old, she still has time, and that Brighton win proves she can do it. The question is whether she can find the right combination of conditions and a clear run to do it again.
