What makes this worth paying attention to is the setting. The Curragh is the home of Irish flat racing, a wide-open stretch of turf in County Kildare where the country's best horses have been tested for centuries. Winning there on debut, at just two years old, is no small thing. Most young horses take a run or two simply to figure out what racing is — Immortal Guard figured it out immediately.
Behind the horse is trainer Robson De Aguiar, operating out of Mullingar in County Westmeath. De Aguiar's yard has already sent out 11 winners this season, which tells you this is not a stable that stumbles into results — they arrive at the track with horses ready to perform. Immortal Guard looks like the latest example of that.
It is, of course, still very early days. A single race tells you a horse can win, not necessarily how good it is or how far it can go. But as starting points go, this is about as promising as they come.
