The partnership with jockey Ben Poste has been the most consistent feature of this horse's career, with the pair teaming up five times. The result is the same each time: no wins, no places. That is not necessarily a criticism of either horse or rider, but five attempts together without a sniff of the prize money does suggest the combination has not yet found a way to unlock whatever is sitting underneath the surface.
Trainer Nikki Evans operates out of Pandy in Monmouthshire and has sent out two winners this season — a modest total, but proof the yard can get a horse to the line first when the right one comes along. Ifan Full Pelt, at this point, does not appear to be that horse. Most of its races have come at Class 4 level, which is solidly mid-tier racing — not the bottom of the ladder, but not a stage where horses are expected to be anything special. Winning even one in three at that level would be a reasonable benchmark. This horse has managed zero from three attempts.
What keeps it relevant is simply that it raced just one day ago, so this is a live, active campaign rather than a chapter that has already closed. Sometimes a horse takes time to find its confidence, or finds a particular track or set of conditions that suddenly brings everything together. Whether Ifan Full Pelt has that kind of turnaround in it remains to be seen. For now, the facts are straightforward: six races, nothing to show for it, and a team that presumably believes there is still something worth chasing.
