The problem is getting those conditions to align. His trainer Harriet Bethell, who operates out of Arnold in East Yorkshire and has sent out 18 winners this season, is refreshingly candid about how maddening this horse can be. He is highly strung and difficult to settle, and the yard has tried various bits of headgear trying to take the edge off him. Last month they targeted Brighton specifically because it looked tailor-made — a track where he had won twice before, in conditions that suited him — and he finished fifth. Then he finished last at Carlisle. When a trainer describes her own horse as "frustrating" and says a run was "a long way to go to finish fifth," that tells you everything.

He has not won since Great Yarmouth in October 2023, and has now gone 32 months without getting his head in front. He is also returning from a break of around eight months, which adds another layer of uncertainty. His most regular partner, jockey Tom Queally, has ridden him 11 times and won twice — a win rate of roughly 1 in 5 when they team up, which is genuinely solid given the horse's overall profile.

Most of his racing has come at Class 6 level — the entry-level tier of British racing — where he has won 2 from 16, around 1 in 8. He is not a high-class horse, and his career earnings reflect that. But there is clearly something there on his day, particularly at Brighton on fast ground. The question, as it has been for a while now, is whether that day comes around again.
