Both of those wins came in the space of a fortnight back in late summer 2024 — first at Ripon in August, then at Thirsk in early September — and both arrived over shorter distances, between five and six-and-a-half furlongs. In that distance range, the record sharpens up considerably: 2 wins from 6 races, meaning it wins 1 in every 3 races at those trips. That is a meaningful difference from its overall record, and it tells you something useful — when Huscal is kept to a sharp, sprint-style trip, it becomes a genuinely different proposition.

The flip side is that it has not won in the 20 months since that Thirsk success, and its recent form makes for slightly sobering reading: an eighth, a twelfth, a second, a fifth, another second, and an eighth in its last six runs. There are glimmers of form in there — two placed efforts suggest it has not gone backwards entirely — but the wins have dried up and the consistency has been hard to find. It raced just yesterday, so it is clearly being kept busy.

Huscal typically competes at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle tier of British racing — competitive enough to be meaningful, but a step below the top end of the sport. At that level, over sprint trips, its 1-in-3 win rate shows it belongs. Charles Hills, who trains Huscal from his yard in Lambourn, has had a productive season with 29 winners already, so there is plenty of confidence in the operation. The question for Huscal now is whether the right combination of trip, track, and conditions can unlock another win for the first time in what is becoming a lengthy drought.
