That said, context matters. Houquetot is trained by James Owen out of Newmarket, one of the most famous racing towns in the world, and the yard has sent out 204 winners already this season — a remarkable volume that puts it among the busiest and most productive operations in British racing. When a trainer is firing in winners at that rate, the horses around them tend to be well-prepared and properly placed. The fact that Houquetot hasn't clicked yet doesn't mean the team has given up on finding the right opportunity.
The most encouraging detail in the recent form is that fifth-place finish — the horse's best result to date and its most recent run, just a day ago. Whether that represents genuine improvement or simply a weaker field is hard to say without more races to judge by, but it's at least movement in the right direction. Three races is a small sample for a 4-year-old, and plenty of horses take time to work out what they're doing before suddenly putting it all together.
