The headline on his CV is a Class 1 win at Cheltenham in November 2023 — one of the top races in Britain, at the sport's most famous venue. What makes it stranger is that co-trainer Oliver Greenall has admitted they entered without expecting to run and were surprised to find themselves in the field. They were even more surprised when Homme Public won, especially given conditions that didn't suit him. That's the kind of result that defines a career, even if it arrived by accident.
Where the numbers get genuinely striking is at his preferred distance and his favourite track. Over 1 mile 6 furlongs to 2 miles, he has won 3 of his 8 races — that's 38%, nearly two in every five. Compare that to his overall 19% win rate and you see a horse that runs to a very specific script. At Wetherby in particular, he's won 2 from 5 visits, making him something of a course specialist there. Trainer Greenall has noted that he needs a strongly run race when the trip is around 2 miles, and that he's really a horse who wants further — two and a half miles suits him best.
The frustrating column is his record at Class 2 level, which is where he runs most often: 0 wins from 14 races. Jockey Henry Brooke perhaps put it best after Homme Public's Doncaster win in December 2024 — his last victory to date — saying the horse is "maybe just shy of being a really good horse." That's a sentence worth sitting with. Not quite good enough for the very top, but good enough to beat them on the right day.
He hasn't won in his last six races, with his most recent run just yesterday showing a third-place finish as the most encouraging result in that stretch. The yard — which has sent out 43 winners this season — is reportedly considering a run over hurdles before targeting the better chases in spring. At nine, Homme Public is not a horse with unlimited time, but with a Cheltenham win on his record and a trainer who clearly believes in him, he remains a horse worth following.
