A 0 from 2 record sounds bleak on paper, but for a horse this young, it is barely an introduction. Two-year-olds are essentially teenagers being asked to compete in a professional sport — many of the best horses to have come through Newmarket yards looked ordinary early on before clicking into gear as they matured and learned what racing was about.

What is notable is that Holi Scarlett raced just yesterday, meaning this is a horse very much in the thick of an active campaign. Williams clearly sees something worth persisting with, and trainers of his calibre — winning at the rate of roughly one winner every three or four days this season — do not keep running horses out of habit. The next start will be telling.
