One run, no wins, no places. It is about as blank a slate as it gets in racing. But context matters here: two-year-olds are essentially teenagers being asked to compete professionally, and finishing twelfth first time out is far from a sentence. Plenty of horses who looked clueless on debut have gone on to win good races once the penny dropped.
What does offer some encouragement is the yard behind High King. Donnacha Aidan O'Brien's operation at Ballyroe has sent out 30 winners already this season — a strong return that suggests a team with real ability to get horses ready to perform. When a stable is firing at that rate, even the horses still to find their form are worth keeping an eye on.
High King's story is only one chapter old. Whether the next one reads better is the question.
