The Aintree win told a story in itself. Skelton admitted afterwards that he thought his horse would blow up from the effort — in other words, run out of steam before the finish — and was genuinely surprised when it didn't. What clicked on the day was a combination of things: the longer distance of just over three miles, the wet ground underfoot, and a horse that apparently jumps far better on a racecourse than it ever showed at home in training. That last detail is the intriguing part. Sometimes horses need the crowd, the atmosphere, the real thing. Hidden History seems to be one of them.
The wet ground angle is worth understanding. On soft or muddy conditions, Hidden History has won 2 of its 6 races — a 33% win rate, or roughly 1 in every 3. That is a strong pattern, and with the British winter still ahead, those conditions are not going to be hard to find. Skelton was clear that softer ground will suit even better, and that the horse can probably stay any distance — which, in jumping terms, is like saying the longer and harder the race gets, the more likely this one is to keep finding more.
The partnership with Harry Skelton, Dan's brother and stable jockey, is another reason to pay attention. Together they have won 2 of their 5 races — 40%, or roughly 2 in every 5 times they line up. That is a high-functioning combination. Dan Skelton himself has had an extraordinary season, sending out 194 winners from his Alcester yard, which puts him among the most powerful training operations in Britain.
Hidden History raced just yesterday, so there is plenty more to come. Skelton mentioned after Aintree that the National Hunt Chase — one of the most prestigious long-distance jumping races in the calendar, run at the Cheltenham Festival — might be a natural target further down the line. The horse that won the same Aintree race last year went on to compete there. Whether Hidden History follows that path remains to be seen, but for now, the signs point to a horse still finding out just how good it can be.
