For a horse who races this widely, returning to one track and winning 40% of the time is the mark of a genuine course specialist — something about the place suits him, whether that is the layout, the way the ground rides, or both.

The puzzle that the yard openly admits is his draw. Helm Rock has repeatedly been assigned wide starting positions, which on many tracks is a significant disadvantage. Daniel Kubler's view is that this has actually masked how good the horse is — as his official rating slips, he will eventually reach a point where the wide draw stops mattering because the quality around him is lower. It is a clever way to look at it, and the recent record suggests the plan is working. His last six runs read 6-2-3-1-2-6, meaning he has placed four times in six outings and won one.
