Heartened

Most of Heartened's racing has come at Class 6 level — the bread-and-butter end of the sport, where horses are competing for modest prize money against similarly limited rivals. Even there, the win rate is just 1 from 12 races, around 8%. The fact that it took this long to get off the mark at that level says something honest about where Heartened sits in the pecking order. And yet, there are small reasons to be encouraged. At distances between a mile and three furlongs and a mile and four furlongs — roughly a lap and a half of a typical track — the horse has won 1 of 5 races, a 20% win rate that is genuinely respectable. That suggests Heartened has a preference, and when the conditions suit, the horse is capable of competing.

Jockey Cam Hardie has been a near-constant presence in the saddle, partnering Heartened in 13 of those 18 races together and picking up that one victory. It is a real long-term partnership, which at least means the horse is in familiar hands. Trainer Ollie Pears, based at Norton in North Yorkshire, has sent out 13 winners so far this season, so the yard is in decent form — it is not as if Heartened is operating from a struggling operation.

Recent form shows a 1 followed by a 3, a 6, a 4, a 6, and a 5 reading from oldest to most recent — in other words, the win at Newcastle was a high point that has not been built upon just yet in subsequent runs. Whether that September victory marked a genuine turning point or a one-off good day remains to be seen. For now, Heartened is a horse doing honest work at the lower end of the sport, occasionally flashing enough ability to keep the yard hopeful — and the team hopeful is probably exactly where this horse needs everyone to be.
