What is worth noting is the team behind the horse. Trainer Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, based at Elmbridge in Worcestershire, have sent out 51 winners already this season, which marks them out as a yard in fine form. When a horse is trained somewhere that is clearly firing on all cylinders, that support structure matters — these are people who know how to get a horse ready to race and, more importantly, ready to win.
For now, Havana Laff is a work in progress. A third-place finish on debut is a reasonable starting point, and with a busy yard behind it and plenty of racing ahead, the real story is still to be written.
