What makes Harbour Lake particularly interesting is that he operates almost exclusively at Class 2 — one step below the very top races in Britain — and holds his own there. He has 2 wins from 11 races at that level, which sounds modest until you consider how competitive those races are. His two most recent wins came at Aintree in November 2024 and Haydock Park in May 2025, both Class 2 contests, and both at tracks that reward a horse with a bit of quality and toughness. After the Haydock win, trainer Alan King was candid enough to say he felt Harbour Lake was "maybe a few pounds too high" carrying 12 stone — which is trainer-speak for: he won despite the weight, not because of an easy opportunity. That tells you something about the horse's character.

King had been managing Harbour Lake carefully since the autumn, steering him back to hurdles after a brief and unhappy experiment with fences — the horse simply didn't take to jumping them, despite looking good at home. Back over hurdles, he found his rhythm again, and King's planning paid off at Aintree. After that win, King flagged the Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival as a target — that is the sport's biggest stage, and not every trainer would be dreaming of it with a ten-year-old.

Jockey Tom Cannon has been the man in the saddle for the bulk of their partnership — 18 races together, with 5 wins at a rate of roughly 1 in every 3.5 rides (28%). That is the kind of consistency that suggests genuine understanding between horse and rider, not just a convenient booking.

Harbour Lake raced just one day ago and is still active, which means this story is very much still being written. At an age when many horses have been retired to quieter lives, he is still winning Class 2 races and prompting his trainer to talk about Cheltenham. That, in itself, is the whole point.
