What makes this slightly puzzling is where Hang On comes from. The yard run by Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith, based in High Eldwick in West Yorkshire, has sent out 42 winners this season — that's a yard in fine form, with plenty of horses clearly doing their job. Hang On just hasn't been one of them. It races at Class 4 level, which is a fairly modest tier of competition, and yet it has come up short in all three races at that level without a single win or place to show for the effort.
Hang On raced just yesterday, so this is as current a snapshot as you can get. At seven, it isn't a youngster still learning the ropes, and the record suggests this horse has found its ceiling — or possibly just hasn't found the right conditions yet. Either way, the name is doing a lot of work right now. Whether it eventually justifies the optimism buried in that title is a question only the next run can answer.
