Halfway House Lad

Start with Newcastle. He has won twice from just five visits there, which means he has converted 40% of his trips to that track into victories. For context, most horses race their whole careers without ever finding a course that suits them that cleanly. His first career win came at Newcastle in November 2024, and that track has clearly stayed in his corner. Add in a win at Hexham just this week — his most recent outing, only a day ago — and you have a horse who is active, in form, and picking up races at northern tracks that seem to bring out the best in him.

He does his best work on normal ground, winning 2 from 7 in those conditions — just under 1 in 3, which is a genuinely strong return. Wet or very dry ground seems to dull whatever edge he has, so conditions matter here more than with most horses.

The partnership with jockey Charlie Price is worth noting too. Price has ridden him in 10 races and won on him twice — a 20% win rate, or 1 in every 5 rides together. That is significantly better than his overall career average, which suggests the two have developed something of an understanding.

Behind all of this is trainer James Moffatt, based up in Cartmel in Cumbria — serious racing country. The yard has sent out 11 winners already this season, so this is not a sleepy operation. Halfway House Lad mostly competes at Class 5, which is the bread-and-butter level of British racing rather than the glamour end, winning 3 from 24 at that level. He is not a horse who is going to turn up at a prestigious festival and cause a stir — but at the right northern track, on normal ground, with Charlie Price aboard, he has shown he knows exactly what he is doing.
