Grey Horizon

The most interesting thread running through this horse's record is what happens at Southwell. Two wins from just four visits there is a remarkable hit rate — winning half your races at any track is the kind of number that makes punters sit up and take notice. Southwell is an all-weather circuit, which means the surface stays consistent regardless of weather, and some horses simply take to it in a way they never do elsewhere. Grey Horizon appears to be one of them, with the most recent Southwell win coming as recently as February of this year.

The partnership with jockey Kieran O'Neill is equally striking. Four wins from nine races together works out at 44% — that's nearly winning every other time they've lined up, which is an extraordinary relationship between horse and rider. O'Neill clearly gets the best out of this horse, and when you see them paired up, the record demands respect.

The bulk of Grey Horizon's wins have come at Class 6, which is the entry-level tier of British racing. Three wins from eight races at that level, a 38% win rate, tells you this horse is genuinely competitive when the conditions suit. It isn't yet troubling the top-tier races, but at three years old, there's no reason it has to be.

The one note of caution is that Grey Horizon hasn't won in the last six races, with recent finishes of sixth, fifth, sixth, ninth, and fourth. That's a dip in form that's hard to ignore, though the horse is clearly still placing and still racing — it ran just yesterday. Whether a return to Southwell, and perhaps to O'Neill in the saddle, is what it takes to get back to winning ways is the obvious question. On the evidence so far, that combination has a habit of producing results.
