What happened next says a lot about the ambition around this horse. For his third race, the team aimed him at Royal Ascot — the Windsor Castle Stakes, one of the most prestigious stages in British racing. He ran well, but the occasion took its toll physically, and he came home looking light and drained. Portman gave him time to recover and let him fill out, and by all accounts the break did him good. That kind of bold decision — pitch a green young horse at a royal meeting — does not always pay off, but it shows the level of confidence the team had in him at the time.

Since returning from that break, the form has been patchier. His career record stands at 2 wins and 5 places from 13 races — roughly 1 win in every 6 or 7 outings — and his most recent victory came at Southwell back in January 2026, now four months ago. His last six runs read 9-3-4-8-1-4, which is a mixed picture: flashes of ability, but not the consistency you would hope for from a horse who looked so sharp early on. Regular partner Rob Hornby has ridden him nine times and won once together, converting at just over 1 in every 9 rides, which is modest.

Still, Gorey Gold raced just yesterday, so he is clearly still in training and still being given chances to find his best form. At three years old, with a Class 2 win already on his record and a Royal Ascot appearance to his name, he has more in his CV than most horses his age. The question is whether he can recapture that early sparkle.
