That one career win came at Fontwell Park on Boxing Day 2023, and it has not been back to the winner's enclosure since. Twenty-eight months is a long time to wait, and it has now gone six races without winning. And yet the recent form is not without encouragement — a fifth, two seconds, a sixth, and two thirds in the last six runs suggests a horse that is competing honestly and finding the frame regularly, even if the winning moment keeps slipping away. At this level, finishing second or third still matters, both to the team and to anyone following along.

Gorcombe Moonshine operates almost exclusively at Class 5, the bread-and-butter tier of British racing, and has managed 1 win from 26 races at that level — a 4% win rate, or one win in every 26 attempts. That is modest by any measure, but it is also a horse that has been put to the test repeatedly and keeps showing up. Harry Kimber, who rides more often than anyone else, has been aboard for 19 of those races and shares that single win. Their partnership is nothing flashy, but it is consistent.

The whole operation is run out of Okeford Fitzpaine in Dorset by trainer Robert Walford, a yard that has sent out 10 winners this season — so there is form in the stable. Gorcombe Moonshine raced just one day ago and remains active, which at nine years old is worth noting in itself. Some horses at this stage of their career fade quietly into the background. This one keeps turning up, keeps finding a place, and keeps the people in its corner believing another day at Fontwell might just be the day it all clicks again.
