Golden Temple

The interesting part of the record is what happens when conditions suit. On normal ground, Golden Temple has won 3 of 11 races — that's just over 1 in 4, a dramatically better picture than its overall numbers suggest. Over long distances of two miles or more, it has won 3 of 21 races, or roughly 1 in 7. Both figures point to the same conclusion: this is a horse that needs a proper test, ideally on a sound surface, and when it gets one, it becomes a genuinely different animal. Its first win came at Downpatrick in May 2024, followed by a second at The Curragh in June of the same year — and nothing since. That Curragh win was 21 months ago, which is a long time to be waiting.

The recent form makes sobering reading: finishing positions of 9, 9, 6, 9, 10, and 6 across the last six races, in reverse order to today. Colin Keane, who has ridden Golden Temple six times, is yet to get a win out of the partnership — 0 from 6 is not a great advertisement, though it likely says more about the horse's current form than the jockey. Meade's yard, meanwhile, is clearly in good health — 41 winners this season from Castletown is a serious output, so the training operation has no problems. The question is simply whether Golden Temple can rediscover whatever it showed at The Curragh on that June afternoon nearly two years ago.

Returning from a three-month break, this is a horse that needs everything to fall right: the right trip, the right ground, and something to reawaken that old spark. It has done it before. Whether it can do it again is the only question worth asking.
