That win arrived at Doncaster in late October 2025, in a Class 2 race — one of the better contests you will find outside the very elite events on the calendar. What made it remarkable was not just that Golden Story won, but *how* he won it. Jockey James Doyle reported afterwards that the horse was, in his trainer's words, "as green as grass" — meaning completely inexperienced and easily distracted. Golden Story was in front so early that it looked like he might win by twenty lengths. Then, in the final hundred yards, he appeared to spot something in the hedge and essentially started winding down before the line. He still won. An experienced, focused racehorse he is not — but the raw ability underneath is clearly something special.
Burke, who operates one of the most productive yards in the country this season — 140 winners and counting — clearly thinks the ceiling here is high. Speaking earlier this year, he described Golden Story as "a really exciting horse with a lot of ability," and he has pencilled in a possible run at the Dante Stakes in May, which is one of the traditional trials for the Epsom Derby. The Derby entry is on the table, though Burke has been candid about the uncertainty: Golden Story is by the stallion Lope De Vega, a sire whose offspring often prefer a shorter trip, and whether he will truly stay the Derby's mile and a half is an open question. At the very minimum, Burke believes he is a Listed-level horse — which in plain terms means he belongs in some of the better races in the sport, just below the very top tier.
With only two races under his belt and a Derby trial potentially on the horizon, Golden Story is essentially an unfinished story. The talent is obvious. The questions around stamina and focus are real. That combination is exactly what makes a three-year-old worth watching in spring.
