Golden Joy

The seven-year-old has won just once from 12 races — 1 from 12, or roughly 8% — which is a modest return on paper. But that one win was a good one. At Leopardstown in March 2025, Golden Joy jumped well throughout and, crucially, Elliott noted afterwards that the ground conditions on the day were a significant factor in the performance. When conditions suit, clearly a different horse shows up. The problem is that the right combination of track, ground, and confidence hasn't come together often enough. His jockey Jordan Gainford suggested that a previous run at Thurles had perhaps come slightly too soon, the race arriving a little too quickly — and that Leopardstown represented a more considered opportunity. It worked.

The regular partnership with Jack Kennedy — five races together without a win — tells its own story. That's not a criticism of either horse or rider, but it does underline how elusive the winning formula has been. The recent run of form (a win, then two unplaced runs, then a second, a fourth, and an unplaced run, reading from oldest to most recent) suggests a horse that finds moments of real quality but can't yet string them together consistently.

What happens next is interesting. Elliott has the two-mile chase division at Down Royal in his sights, and he made the point after Leopardstown that the two-mile chasing ranks aren't always loaded with depth — meaning Golden Joy doesn't need to be an elite performer to be competitive. He just needs the right day. Raced as recently as yesterday and still very much active, Golden Joy is a horse whose trainer genuinely believes there is more to come. Whether the track finds that version before the season is out is the question worth following.
