Golden Glance

The recent form makes for difficult reading. Looking at the last six races, the best finish has been a fifth, with three sevenths and a ninth filling out the rest of the picture. These are not the numbers of a horse threatening to break back into the winner's enclosure any time soon, and yet Golden Glance raced just yesterday, which tells you the team still believes there's a race to be won somewhere.

Henry Brooke has been the regular partner, riding in 7 of those 17 races and sharing in that sole victory at Haydock. Together they win roughly 1 in every 7 races as a combination — not spectacular, but not without hope either. The yard behind the horse, run by Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero out of Oldcastle in Cheshire, has been in strong form this season with 43 winners — so the operation clearly knows how to get horses winning. The question is whether they can find the right opportunity to unlock Golden Glance again.

Most of its races have come at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle of the racing ladder — competitive enough to be meaningful, but not the rarefied air of the top events. At that level, the record reads 1 win from 7 races, or 1 in 7, which at least suggests the horse belongs in those races even if the wins have dried up. Haydock Park remains the one place where it all clicked, and you wouldn't be surprised to see the team point it back there in search of a spark. Sometimes a horse just needs its favourite track and the right day. For Golden Glance, that day is now nearly three and a half years overdue.
