For a young horse, that matters. Two-year-olds are essentially teenagers stepping into the unknown for the first time, and plenty of them need a run or two just to figure out what racing is about. God Given Talent skipped that learning curve entirely.
The horse is trained by James Ferguson at Newmarket, one of British racing's great centres, and Ferguson's yard has been in seriously good form this season — 26 winners already, which tells you this is not a one-horse operation but a yard firing on all cylinders. When a trainer in that kind of form sends out a debutant and it wins first time, it usually means they had real confidence in the horse heading into the race.
It is early days, of course. One win from one race is a perfect record, but it is also the smallest possible sample size. What happens next — whether God Given Talent steps up in class, goes again at Newbury, or heads somewhere entirely new — will tell us a great deal more. For now, though, the name feels almost too appropriate. Talent, on this evidence, is exactly what it has.
