The story of Go West is really a story about smart placement. Paul Nicholls, one of Britain's most decorated trainers, operates out of Ditcheat in Somerset and has sent out 92 winners already this season alone — a yard that knows exactly what it is doing. Last season, Nicholls found a sequence of races that suited Go West perfectly, and the horse responded by winning three in a row, each time without ever having to look at another rival. That kind of dominance — winning so comfortably that the other horses are barely relevant — is the sign of a horse that has found its level and is thriving in it. The team then tried stepping it up into a longer, harder race, and Go West found that a stretch too far. No disgrace in that; it tells you something useful about where the horse belongs.
The partnership with jockey Harry Cobden has been particularly fruitful. In nine races together, Cobden has ridden Go West to five wins — that's winning more than half the time, a remarkable record by any measure. Cobden has spoken warmly about the horse after victories, noting how well it jumps and how it seems to be continuing to improve. A jockey who can hear rival horses making mistakes behind him is a jockey going very well indeed.
Go West's most recent win came at Musselburgh in February, and with a race just yesterday, this is very much an active, busy horse. Its last six runs read 4-4-1-3-2-1 — two wins sandwiching a couple of placed efforts, which suggests a horse in good form rather than one that is fading. It tends to compete in Class 3 races, which sit in the middle tier of British racing, and has won half of the four it has entered at that level — two wins from four races.
At eight years old, Go West is in the prime of a racehorse's career, experienced enough to know its job and still sharp enough to do it well. This is exactly the kind of dependable, well-handled horse that yards like Nicholls' build a strong season around.
