Over distances between a mile and three and a mile and four furlongs, it has won 1 of 8 races — a 12 percent win rate that stands out against its dismal overall record. That same distance is where it tends to finish in the money, even when victory stays out of reach. On shorter or longer trips, Glitter Code rarely troubles the judge.

What is striking is that Glitter Code has never won in nine attempts at the lowest class level, where it usually competes. The win at Ripon breaks that pattern. Regular pilot Marco Ghiani, who has ridden the horse six times without a winner, was not in the saddle this time. That change of circumstances, combined with the right distance and track, finally clicked. Edward Bethell's Middleham yard has been prolific this season with 61 winners, but Glitter Code has been a tough puzzle to solve. Now, at least, there is proof the horse can get the job done.
