It is only the sixth time this horse has lined up at that level, and winning one from six in the best company around is genuinely impressive. Most horses spend their whole careers chasing a result like that. Glengouly got there.

Faye Bramley's yard in Lambourn has been in terrific form this season, sending out 19 winners, and Glengouly represents exactly the kind of big-day performer that gives a training operation its reputation. Paul Townend, who has partnered the horse five times, has a 20% win rate aboard — one from five — which is a decent return and suggests a combination that clicks when it matters.

One clear pattern in Glengouly's record is a love of wet, soft ground. In those conditions, the horse has won two from three — a remarkable 67% win rate. On a dry, fast surface the results are far more ordinary. That is the sort of detail that makes this horse a very different proposition depending on the weather, and it likely explains why Cheltenham in December — when the ground is reliably soft — suits so well.

At ten, some horses are winding down — but Glengouly is still turning up at the top level and still competitive.
